Django meets Mussorgsky - including music by Hoagy Carmichael and Tim
Charismatic Dutch violinist and composer Tim Kliphuis doesn't like to be pigeonholed into any one genre. His unique style is influenced and inspired by elements of classical, gypsy jazz and folk music. Nigel Clark on guitar and Roy Percy on double bass have been performing with Tim as the Tim Kliphuis Trio since 2007. The trio describes its mission as 'total music' without barriers.
2024 sees the 150th anniversary of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which the Russian Romantic composed in honour of his friend, the artist Viktor Hartmann, who had died suddenly the previous year, aged only 39. In celebration of the anniversary, the trio presents a brand new Pictures at an Exhibition, showcasing the daring innovations of Mussorgsky’s music through a unique and exciting lens. Original movements, Promenade, Baba Yaga, The Old Castle – and more – are ‘re-invented’ and, taking Mussorgsky’s lead, Tim Kliphuis has composed new musical representations of famous paintings like Klimt’s The Kiss, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Hokusai’s Great Wave and O’Keeffe’s Ritz Tower. Music associated with Django Reinhardt will form the second half of this concert, including pieces by Hoagy Carmichael and Tim himself.
